This recipe is for emulsified body butter.

The difference between body lotion and emulsified body butter is that a body lotion contains more water and fewer oils and butters. The emulsified body butter has a large percentage of butters, which gives it a very thick and creamy texture, much more rich and heavy than body lotion.

Regular body butter does not contain any water-based ingredients. So regular body butter is greasy when emulsified body butter is not greasy but still gives you the intense thickness from the high amount of butters.

This is a great recipe for dry skin or cold dry weather, when you want more rich texture and very intense moisturizing to your skin.

My favorite butters to use are shea butter and cocoa butter. I use the unrefined version of both. You can definitely make this with different kinds of butter.

I'm adding stearic acid, which helps thicken the product and gives it a velvety, creamy feeling when applied to the skin.

Also, I'm using jojoba oil (technically, a polyunsaturated wax), a perfect ingredient for dry skin. Jojoba oil provides topical skin-soothing benefits.

In this recipe, I'm adding xanthan gum to increase the emulsion stability. Xanthan gum in creams is usually used as a thickening agent and emulsions stabilizer.

For my emulsifying wax I use olivem1000. It is a natural emulsifying wax derived from olive oil. It has conditioning benefits, which is why it's a great E-wax for this recipe.

This recipe is for 300g. You can make half the recipe to fill only one container instead of two.

Notes:

  • You can use a different emulsifying wax, taking into consideration that each Ewax will give you a different texture. Also, each Ewax has different conditioning properties. The reason I use Olivem1000 is that it has excellent conditioning properties, which are very beneficial in this type of product.

  • You can use kokum butter or mango butter to replace cocoa butter and shea butter.

  • You can swap jojoba oil with avocado oil or olive oil.

  • You can use cetyl alcohol instead of stearic acid.

  • You can use essential oil instead of fragrance oil. Make sure you choose a safe essential oil (some essential oils can irritate the skin or are not suitable for pregnant women). You can choose to make this product without any scent, in this case add 3g of jojoba oil instead of the fragrance oil.

  • If you are using a different preservative, please check the supplier instructions and use the preservative accordingly.
