Hibiscus Hands Sanitizer Gel
In this post I’ll explain to you step by step how to make your own hand sanitizer gel, using hibiscus infusion, which will give your gel a beautiful purple color.
Pair the infusion with aloe vera juice for more great benefits for your skin, aloe vera juice is known to help with conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. Both together are a great combination for this hand gel.
When you’re choosing an essential oil please remember not to use photosensitive essential oils such as bergamot, orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime, etc.), since compounds found in citrus oils greatly increase UV sensitivity, and you are using it on your hands during the day.
Also be very careful with storage or shipping this hand sanitizer gel, sanitizer gels are highly flammable.
For a hand sanitizer to be safe to use, you should use isopropyl alcohol 70% or 96%, it can not be replaced with vodka or similar, isopropyl alcohol is also known as rubbing alcohol.
Now, let’s make our hibiscus hands sanitizer gel.
Ingredients:
Phase A
- Hibiscus infusion 20g
- Aloe vera juice 9.7g
Phase B
- Glycerin 3g
- Xanthan gum clear 0.8g
Phase C
- Isopropyl alcohol 70% or 96% 66g
Phase D
- Essential oil 0.5g
Method:
- Prepare the infusion by using distilled water and dried hibiscus flowers.
- Strain the infusion.
- Measure 20g of your infusion in a beaker
- Add 9.7g aloe vera juice.
- In a different small container pour the glycerin.
- Add the gum to the glycerin.
- Mix the gum and glycerin to make a slurry.
- Now add the slurry to the beaker and mix to combine them until a jelly texture is formed.
- Now add the Isopropyl alcohol, I recommend adding it in 3 parts, mix after each add, at first add 20g and mix. Then another 20g and mix, and finally add 26g and mix well.
- Add the essential oil or fragrance oil and mix to combine.
- Pour into containers.
Notes :
- This recipe is 100g which can fit in 3 little gel containers.
- If you are not using clear xanthan gum your gel will not be transparent, it will be opaque.
- If you wish to skip the essential oil (or fragrance oil) you can add 0.5g of aloe vera juice to exchange the essential oil. Essential oils in sanitizer gel only give a nice smell to the gel.
- Since we are using 70% Isopropyl alcohol or 96% there is no need for a preservative, more than 60% alcohol is a self preserving product.
- If you want to achieve a more pinkish color you can change the amount of infusion in the formula, for example use only 12g of infusion and 17,7 aloe vera juice. Different amounts of the infusion will result in a different shade of pink or purple.
