This formula is for a liquid shampoo that is suitable for normal hair.

If you want to try solid shampoo bars, check the Balancing Gentle Solid Shampoo or the Pourable Shampoo Bars.

Phase A of this shampoo starts with Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS), a mild surfactant derived from coconut oil. SCS is known for its excellent cleansing and foaming properties; It effectively removes dirt, oil, and product buildup without being too harsh on the scalp and hair.

We add the distilled water to the SCS and place them in a double boiler on medium heat to dissolve the SCS before we add phase B.

Coco Betaine in phase B, another surfactant in this formula, is a mild, amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil that enhances the foam and conditioning properties of the shampoo. Coco Betaine helps to reduce irritation and improve the overall mildness of the formula, making it suitable for daily use on normal hair types. We will add the coco betaine to phase A while heating. The combination of these surfactants creates a thicker viscosity to the final product.

In phase C, I used citric acid to lower the pH so that the final product would have a pH of around 5. The scalp's natural pH is slightly acidic, which helps keep it healthy by supporting a balanced microbiome. A shampoo with a pH of 5 aligns with this natural acidity, preventing the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi that can lead to dandruff, itchiness, and infections. This pH level helps calm the scalp and is free from irritation, promoting overall health.

Also, in phase C, I used Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, for its moisturizing and strengthening properties. Panthenol penetrates the hair shaft, improving moisture retention and elasticity. It also helps to smooth the hair surface, reducing split ends and adding a natural shine.

Inulin, a natural polysaccharide, is also in phase C. Inulin acts as a prebiotic, promoting a healthy scalp by supporting the growth of beneficial microorganisms. It also has conditioning properties, helping to improve the texture and feel of the hair. Inulin leaves the hair soft and smooth without weighing it down.

Phase D has the preservative, fragrance and glycerin.
