Overview

Guar gum is a natural polysaccharide extracted from the seeds of the guar plant, a legume grown primarily in India and Pakistan. The cosmetic grade is a fine off-white to pale tan powder with a very faint grain-like scent.

It is one of the cheapest natural thickeners — significantly less expensive than xanthan or sclerotium gum — and is widely used in food, cosmetics, and industrial applications. The thickening capacity is high: as little as 0.5% can transform water into a viscous gel.

There are two grades to know:

  • Native guar gum: the raw powder, slow to hydrate, slightly less smooth.
  • Hydroxypropyl guar: a modified version (different INCI) that hydrates faster and is used in hair care for conditioning.

Shelf life is 2-3 years stored cool, dry, and sealed.

The challenge with guar gum is its less elegant skin feel compared to xanthan and certain other gums. Guar gum gels can feel slightly slippy or “snotty” — a real phenomenon often described as “stringiness.” Modern formulators often blend guar with xanthan to combine guar’s thickening efficiency with xanthan’s smoother feel.

What it does in a formula

Guar gum is a galactomannan polymer — long chains of mannose with galactose branches. When hydrated in water, these chains form a viscous network that thickens the liquid dramatically.

In a formula it acts as a water-phase thickener, emulsion stabilizer, and suspension agent. It is particularly useful for thickening shampoos, body washes, and clear gels at low cost.

Guar gum is also a film-former on hair, giving conditioning and detangling action — though the modified version (hydroxypropyl guar, or even more so, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride) is more effective for hair conditioning.

How to use

Add to the water phase. Pre-hydrate in cold water with vigorous stirring; let sit 30-60 minutes for full hydration. Or sprinkle slowly onto warm water with continuous stirring.

Tolerates heat-and-hold to 80 C; cool-down hydration also works.

Usage rates by product type:

  • Shampoos and body washes (thickening): 0.5-1.5%
  • Hair gels: 0.5-2%
  • Clear water-based gels: 0.5-1.5%
  • Lotions and creams (stabilizer): 0.2-0.5%
  • Hair conditioners: 0.5-1%
  • Mascara and gel eyeliners: 0.5-1%

Best for / Worst for

Best for: budget thickening, large-format surfactant products, hair products, clear gels where cost matters more than the absolute best skin feel.

Worst for: premium face products where the slightly stringy feel matters, transparent products where any haze is unacceptable, formulas with strong electrolytes (salt can disrupt the gel).

Common pitfalls

Hydration time. Native guar gum needs 30-60 minutes to fully hydrate. Rushing this gives a thinner, less stable gel.

Stringy feel. Guar gum gels can be slightly stringy or slippy. For premium feel, blend with xanthan gum (use 0.3% guar + 0.3% xanthan for a smoother gel than either alone).

Salt sensitivity. Strong electrolytes (sodium chloride, calcium chloride) can disrupt guar gels. Test formulas with all ingredients in place.

Substitutes

  • Xanthan gum — smoother feel, more expensive, faster hydration.
  • Sclerotium gum — premium feel, higher cost.
  • Hydroxypropyl guar — modified for faster hydration, better for hair.
  • Carbomer — synthetic, clear gels, requires pH adjustment.
