Why both exist

Both are non-ionic emulsifiers for oil-in-water emulsions:

  • Olivem 1000 — INCI: Cetearyl Olivate (and) Sorbitan Olivate. A liquid-crystal emulsifier derived from olive oil. Forms a lamellar matrix that mimics the skin’s natural lipid layer — hence the famously soft, “second-skin” feel.
  • Polawax NF — INCI proprietary, but ~80% cetearyl alcohol + ~20% polysorbate 60 + a touch of PEG-150 stearate. The “NF” means it meets the National Formulary pharmacopeia standard, so the ratio is locked and the performance is consistent batch to batch.

When Olivem 1000 wins

  • Natural/clean-beauty positioning — olive-derived, ECOcert and Cosmos approved.
  • Sensitive skin — well tolerated, no PEG/polysorbate concerns.
  • Velvety face creams — the liquid-crystal structure gives a unique soft finish.
  • Mature-skin moisturisers — pairs beautifully with rich oils.

When Polawax NF wins

  • First-time formulators — almost impossible to break; very forgiving of process errors.
  • High-oil-load formulas (body butters, balm-creams at 30%+ oil) — Polawax handles this; Olivem 1000 struggles above 25%.
  • Wet-skin and shower lotions — Polawax films build well even on damp skin.
  • Budget production — Polawax is cheaper per kg and more widely stocked.
  • Pharmaceutical-style consistency — NF standardisation means lot-to-lot performance is identical.

Process differences

  • Olivem 1000: heat-and-hold at 75-80°C. Needs strong shear during emulsification; weak stirring gives a thin, breaking emulsion.
  • Polawax NF: heat-and-hold at 70-75°C. More forgiving of process; even gentle hand-whisking works.

Usage rates

  • Olivem 1000: 3-8% (typical 5%)
  • Polawax NF: 3-8% (typical 6%)

Roughly interchangeable in formula percentage, but the feel and processing differ significantly. NOT a 1:1 swap by sensorial profile.

Substitutes for both

  • Emulsifying Wax NF — generic equivalent of Polawax, looser spec, cheaper.
  • Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate — another classic non-ionic, similar profile.
  • Montanov 68 — natural-positioned, cetearyl glucoside-based, gentler than Olivem.
