Recipe troubleshoot: my lotion separated — help

diycosmetica_team · 2w ago

Posting this so we can build a small troubleshooting library. If your lotion separated, came out grainy, or wouldn't emulsify, drop the recipe + what you think went wrong. Replies welcome.

Why your cream separated (3 main reasons):

    1. The phases weren’t at the same temperature

This is probably the most common mistake.

When you combine the water phase and the oil phase, they should be at roughly the same temperature (usually around 70–75°C). If one is much cooler than the other, the emulsifier won’t work properly and the structure won’t form correctly.

This often leads to: separation after a few hours, a watery layer forming or unstable texture.

    2. Not enough emulsifier (or wrong one)

If your formula doesn’t have enough emulsifier, or if the emulsifier doesn’t match the type of emulsion you’re making, the cream simply won’t hold together.

    Things to check:
Are you using the correct percentage?
Is your emulsifier suitable for oil-in-water systems?
Did you accidentally reduce it when modifying the formula?

Even small changes can break the balance.

    3. Poor mixing / not enough shear

    Emulsions need energy to form.

If you just stir lightly, the oil and water won’t properly combine. You need enough mixing (hand blender, mini mixer, or strong stirring) to break the oil into small droplets and create a stable structure.

If not, you might get: separation after cooling, uneven texture or oil rising to the top.
