Peppermint Hydrosol
INCI: Mentha Piperita Leaf Water
Steam-distilled water from peppermint leaves. Cooling, refreshing, and mildly stimulating for skin and scalp.
Overview
Peppermint hydrosol is the water fraction collected during steam distillation of peppermint leaves. The scent is unmistakable — bright, fresh, minty, with that characteristic cooling note that peppermint is famous for. It is milder than the essential oil but still distinctly minty.
The active fraction includes small amounts of menthol, menthone, and other monoterpenoids that give the cooling sensation. Unlike the essential oil (which is too strong for direct skin contact at most percentages), the hydrosol delivers a gentle cooling and refreshing effect that is well-tolerated.
The pH is slightly acidic (4.5-5.5), skin-compatible.
Shelf life is 12-18 months unopened, 6 months opened (refrigerated), with preservation.
It is a favourite ingredient in summer skincare, scalp serums, foot care, and refreshing body sprays. The cooling sensation makes the product feel active even when the actual chemistry is gentle.
What it does in a formula
The trace menthol gives a mild cooling sensation on application — real chemistry, not just perception. The hydrosol is also mildly astringent and antimicrobial, which makes it useful for oily skin, scalp issues, and foot care.
The aromatic fraction adds a refreshing minty scent that disappears in 30-60 minutes in finished products but is strongly perceptible at the moment of application.
In a formula peppermint hydrosol acts as a sensory ingredient (cooling, refreshing scent) and a gentle supportive active for oily, problem, and overheated skin.
How to use
Add to the water phase. Tolerates heat-and-hold to 70 C; cool-down preserves more of the aromatic fraction.
Usage rates by product type:
- Cooling face mists and toners: 50-100%
- Scalp serums and shampoos (stimulating): 30-100%
- Foot creams and sprays: 50-100%
- Body sprays (refreshing): 50-100%
- Acne face serums: 20-50%
- After-sun gels: 30-50% (paired with calming hydrosols)
- Hair growth scalp blends: 30-50%
Best for / Worst for
Best for: summer skincare, oily and acne-prone skin, foot care, scalp stimulation and hair growth blends, refreshing body sprays, cooling sport and post-exercise formulas.
Worst for: very sensitive skin (the cooling sensation can be irritating to reactive skin), mucous membrane areas (avoid eye contact), young children and infants (menthol can cause respiratory issues in babies and very young children — peppermint is contraindicated in formulas for under-3s in many traditional sources), pregnant customers (some traditional caution).
Common pitfalls
Avoid eye area. Peppermint trace compounds can sting eyes. Keep peppermint hydrosol out of eye creams and avoid recommending application near the eyes.
Baby/toddler safety. Menthol can suppress breathing in infants and small children. Do not use peppermint hydrosol in formulas for under-3s.
Confusion with peppermint essential oil. They are different products. The hydrosol is gentle and water-soluble; the essential oil is concentrated and oil-soluble. Different use rates and safety profiles.
Substitutes
- Spearmint hydrosol — milder mint, similar role, safer for sensitive contexts.
- Eucalyptus hydrosol — different chemistry, similar cooling positioning.
- Witch hazel hydrosol — different chemistry, similar astringent role.
- Cucumber extract + glycerin — for the cooling effect without the menthol chemistry.
