A three-component hair-density blend combining a peptide with two plant flavonoids. Targets DHT, microcirculation, and follicle anchoring.
Overview
This is one of the older proprietary hair-density blends still in active use. The combination pairs three actives in a single bottle: apigenin (a flavonoid from chamomile and parsley with mild 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor activity), oleanolic acid (a triterpenoid with anti-inflammatory and follicle-support effects), and biotinoyl tripeptide-1 (a hair-positioning peptide). The trio is delivered in a butylene glycol carrier that also acts as a solubilizer.
The trade-name version most often referenced in hair-growth marketing is one supplier’s specific branded combination; the INCI on your label is the six-ingredient list above. The supplier’s product is sold pre-mixed at a known ratio.
It is supplied as a clear, slightly viscous pale yellow liquid with a faint scent. Water-soluble (via the glycol carrier). Shelf life is 12-18 months stored cool and dark.
Published research is mostly from the supplier — the clinical data shows reduction in hair fall and improvement in hair density over 4 months of consistent twice-daily use, with effects mainly in mild to moderate androgenic hair loss. Independent verification on the full blend is more limited, but the individual components (apigenin, oleanolic acid, biotinoyl tripeptide-1) have separate published support.
What it does in a formula
Three complementary mechanisms:

Apigenin: DHT modulation and microcirculation. Mild 5-alpha-reductase inhibition reduces local conversion of testosterone to DHT (which drives follicle miniaturization in pattern hair loss). Apigenin also has direct vasoactive effects supporting scalp blood flow.

Oleanolic acid: anti-inflammation and follicle anchoring. Reduces low-grade inflammation around the follicle and supports the structural anchoring proteins that keep hair shafts in place.

Biotinoyl tripeptide-1: dermal papilla signaling. Reaches the cells at the base of the follicle and signals them to extend the growth phase of the hair cycle.
In a formula it is invisible at use levels — no scent, no color, no significant texture impact. Plays well with caffeine, panthenol, and other hair actives.
How to use
Cool-down only, below 40 C. Stir into the cooled emulsion gently. All three components are heat-sensitive.
Usage rates by product type (referring to the supplier blend):
- Leave-on scalp serums: 2-3%
- Leave-on hair tonics: 2-3%
- Leave-in conditioners: 2-3%
- Multi-active hair growth blends: 2%
The standard rate is 3% of the supplier blend.
Best for / Worst for
Best for: mild to moderate pattern hair loss, postpartum shedding, age-related thinning, leave-on scalp products, formulators wanting a multi-mechanism hair blend at moderate cost, hair-fall reduction positioning.
Worst for: advanced pattern baldness, rinse-off products (contact time too short), users with hormone-sensitive medical conditions where flavonoid exposure is a concern (consult a doctor), pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical clearance.
Common pitfalls
Treating it as a hair-growth drug. Cosmetic-grade effects, not pharmaceutical. For significant pattern hair loss, recommending a doctor consultation is appropriate.
Using only in shampoo. Contact time too short. Leave-on serums are the right format.
Cooking it. Cool-down only.
Inconsistent use. 3-4 months of daily application before visible change.
Combining at high doses with other 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Stacking apigenin with saw palmetto with biochanin A at maximum doses provides diminishing returns and may raise systemic considerations.
