Hair Active

Capixyl (Biochanin A + Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3)

INCI: Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract

A combination of a peptide and a red clover extract designed for hair density. Targets 5-alpha-reductase and dermal papilla.

Solubility Water-soluble

Overview

This combination ingredient pairs Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 (a cosmetic hair-growth peptide) with red clover flower extract standardized for biochanin A, an isoflavone with mild 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor activity. The pairing is designed to address pattern hair loss through two mechanisms at once: the peptide signals dermal papilla cells at the follicle base, while the clover extract gently reduces the local production of the androgen DHT that drives hair miniaturization in pattern hair loss.

The trade-name version most often referenced in hair-growth marketing is one supplier’s specific branded combination; the INCI names you would put on your label are the two components listed above. Other suppliers offer similar combinations under different names.

It is supplied as a clear pale yellow water-thin liquid with a faint herbal scent, fully water-soluble. Shelf life is 12-18 months stored cool and dark.

Published research is modest but consistent — the supplier’s clinical data shows reduction in shedding and improvement in hair density over 4 months of consistent twice-daily use. Independent studies on the individual components (acetyl tetrapeptide-3 and biochanin A) also support the rationale. It is one of the more evidence-supported cosmetic hair-density actives.

What it does in a formula

Two complementary mechanisms:

  1. Peptide signaling at the dermal papilla. Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 reaches the cells at the base of the hair follicle and signals them to extend the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.

  2. 5-alpha-reductase modulation. Biochanin A from red clover gently reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp. In pattern hair loss, DHT is the molecule that drives follicle miniaturization. Less local DHT means slower miniaturization and longer-lived follicles.

In a formula it is invisible at use levels — no scent (the herbal note from the supplier blend is faint), no color contribution, no texture impact.

How to use

Cool-down only, below 40 C. Stir into the cooled emulsion gently. Both components are heat-sensitive.

Usage rates by product type (referring to the supplier blend, not pure actives):

  • Leave-on scalp serums: 3-5%
  • Leave-on hair tonics: 3-5%
  • Leave-in conditioners: 2-4%
  • Multi-active hair growth blends: 3-4%

The standard rate is 4% of the supplier blend.

Best for / Worst for

Best for: mild to moderate pattern hair loss, postpartum shedding, age-related density loss, leave-on scalp products, formulators wanting a peptide-and-botanical hair blend with credible data.

Worst for: advanced pattern baldness with completely miniaturized follicles, rinse-off products (contact time too short), users with hormone-sensitive medical conditions where phytoestrogen exposure is a concern (consult a doctor), pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical clearance.

Common pitfalls

Treating it as a hair-growth drug. It is a cosmetic blend with gentle effects. For significant pattern hair loss, recommending a doctor consultation about prescription options is the right approach.

Using only in shampoo. Contact time is too short for the peptide to reach the dermal papilla. Leave-on serums are the right format.

Cooking it. Cool-down only. Heat-phase addition degrades both components.

Inconsistent use. Realistic timeline is 3-6 months of daily application before visible change.

Skipping the medical conversation. Significant or sudden hair loss warrants a doctor visit before any DIY product.
