sh-Oligopeptide-1 (EGF)
INCI: sh-Oligopeptide-1
A 53-amino-acid growth factor produced via biotechnology. Powerful skin-cell signal for repair and renewal — with significant safety caveats.
Overview
sh-Oligopeptide-1 is the cosmetic INCI for human Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), a 53-amino-acid protein originally identified in 1962 as the molecule that signals epithelial cells to grow and divide. Modern cosmetic-grade EGF is not extracted from human tissue — the “sh” prefix means “synthetic, human” and refers to material produced by genetically engineered bacteria or yeast that have been programmed to make the human protein. It is supplied as a freeze-dried white powder, water-soluble, with no scent.
Active material concentration is extraordinarily small — typically 1 to 10 parts per million in finished serums, equivalent to 0.0001%-0.001% of the bottle. Even at those tiny levels it is expensive: cosmetic-grade EGF can cost several hundred to several thousand dollars per gram depending on purity.
The safety situation is more complicated than most cosmetic ingredients. Growth factors instruct cells to divide, and there is ongoing scientific discussion about whether topical growth factors could theoretically affect skin cells in unintended ways — for example, in skin where pre-cancerous cells might already be present. Published data does not show clear harm at cosmetic use levels, but long-term safety is not as well established as for older cosmetic ingredients. Anyone with a personal or family history of skin cancer, or who is currently pregnant or breastfeeding, should discuss EGF products with their doctor before using.
Shelf life of the raw powder is 12 months refrigerated. In finished formula, stored cool, it is stable for 3-6 months.
What it does in a formula
EGF binds to EGF receptors on the surface of skin cells and signals them to enter the cell cycle and divide. This is the natural process by which the skin renews itself; topical EGF aims to nudge that process along, supporting healing of barrier damage, surface roughness, and post-procedure recovery.
Published clinical studies show improvements in fine lines, skin texture, and post-laser recovery time over 4-12 weeks of daily use at very low concentrations.
It is invisible in a finished product — no scent, no color, no texture impact.
How to use
Cool-down only, below 30 C if possible. EGF is heat-sensitive and denatures readily. Add right at the end of formulation, with brief gentle stirring only.
Usage rates by product type (referring to active EGF, not a supplier blend):
- Anti-aging serums: 1-10 ppm
- Post-procedure repair products: 5-10 ppm
- Eye creams: 1-5 ppm
When working from a supplier’s pre-diluted solution, follow their stated use percentage exactly.
Best for / Worst for
Best for: post-procedure repair (after laser, microneedling, chemical peels under medical supervision), mature skin with clear medical clearance, formulators with cold-chain storage and short product turnover.
Worst for: anyone with a personal or family history of skin cancer (consult a doctor first), pregnancy and breastfeeding (consult a doctor first), anhydrous products, warm-shelf storage, beginners who want a simple anti-aging peptide.
Common pitfalls
Heat exposure. EGF denatures around 40 C and loses activity. Cool-down only, and avoid any prolonged warming.
Wrong storage. Best stored refrigerated through the product’s life. Counter-temperature storage cuts shelf life sharply.
Combining with low-pH actives in the same product. Best at pH 5.5-7. Below 5 it loses activity.
Skipping the safety conversation with users. Growth factor cosmetics are not in the same safety category as a panthenol serum. Anyone with a complex medical history should be advised to consult their doctor before using.
Combining with strong exfoliants on the same skin at the same time. The growth factor is a signaling protein; exposing freshly exfoliated, inflamed skin to it is not the right context.
Substitutes
- Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu) — well-evidenced wound-healing and collagen-supporting peptide, much safer profile.
- Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Tetrapeptide-7 — gentler signal peptide blend for anti-aging.
- Centella Asiatica Titrated Extract — botanical option for post-procedure recovery.
- Panthenol + Allantoin — non-peptide everyday repair actives.
